A Full Mouth Reconstruction for Cosmetic Reasons? A Dentist Can Help You With Your Restorative Goals

Full mouth reconstruction goes past restoring the function of your teeth. It also improves the way your teeth look. The appearance of your teeth is one of the most important parts of your physical look. It can prevent you from making a positive first impression and can leave you feeling self-conscious during interactions.

Fixing a tooth typically leads to improving its appearance, since general dentists use many of the same treatments used by cosmetic dentists during smile makeovers.

What to expect during full mouth reconstruction

The process often starts with a dentist evaluating the patient's dental problems. A visual inspection and diagnostic tests like X-rays are typically used to make this determination. The dentist will then come up with a comprehensive treatment plan that tackles all these problems and restores the function of the patient's teeth. The dentist will also talk to the patient about any cosmetic issues that they would like to have addressed and add appropriate treatments to their patient's treatment plan.

Treatments that a dentist might use to restore the function and appearance of a patient's smile during full mouth reconstruction include:

1. Crowns

These are versatile oral restorations that are often used during full mouth reconstruction. A crown is a shell that encases the visible part of the tooth above the gums. The crown protects the tooth from bite forces and irritants in the mouth like oral bacteria and acids. The crown can be color-matched with the patient's real teeth to ensure that it blends in. The dentist will also match the shape and height of the crown to ensure that the repaired tooth looks natural.

2. Implants

These are used to replace missing teeth. The implant goes into the patient's jaw where it fuses with surrounding bone tissue that keeps it in place. It is the only way to replace a missing tooth that replaces the tooth's root. Implants also have more longevity than other ways to replace teeth, like dentures and bridges. The installation of implants requires minor oral surgery, so the patient needs to be healthy enough for that.

3. Dental bonding

This involves using composite resin to restore moderate or mild damage to a tooth. The composite is color-matched with the rest of the patient's teeth so the repairs made to the tooth are not visible. Composite resins are typically used to repair chipped teeth, broken teeth and teeth that have been damaged by tooth decay.

4. Dental bridges

As the name implies, bridges are used to cover gaps in a person's smile caused by missing teeth. The two natural teeth closest to the gap are typically crowned and used as anchors. They are called abutments. The bridge itself is a set of artificial teeth attached to the abutment. It is a more affordable solution than implants.
